Oh my...Cod? (Eastport's 4th of July!)

We had an absolutely action-packed weekend this time 'round! The long weekend gave us an extra day to cram in more good food, gorgeous weather, beaches, friends & family, and then - add to that the festivities surrounding the 4th of July holiday! I might sleep for 48 hours straight...(yeah, right!)

Eastport, ME - July 3rd, 2011

So, this fisherman statue was given to the city of Eastport by a film company who  came to town a few years back to shoot a murder-mystery show. The program was a complete flop, but - they renovated a few buildings downtown before they left, and also deposited this super corny monument! (alright, it's not toooo bad, right?)
Mkay & I, standing in front of the Navy vessel.

I've got a big, bad blog coming outlining all of the glorious weekend events, but - these Cod Fish Relay photos couldn't wait another second to be posted.

The story? Well, Eastport, Maine hosts a absolutely kickin' 4th of July weekend full of fun and excitement for the whole family every year. One of the events of the weekend is the annual 'Cod Fish Relay', which was the brain-child of my super best friend Penny's dad years ago. I'd actually never even witnessed this grand event, let alone participated - until this year.

So, while we were hanging out at Penny & Kara's house Friday night, Penny says to me, "So - we might be one person short on our Cod Fish Relay team...you interested?"
me - "HELL YES".
I was slightly enthused to be participating in this event. Typical 'relay' race rules apply - teams of 4 run from point A to point B, stopping at each point to strip off rubber boots, fisherman's pants and jacket, and deposit the vegetable oil-soaked Cod into a bait bucket.

Feast your eyes on THESE:

fish faces - our pre game. (don't ask me why I can't make a fish face...)

slickin' up the Cod

i'm so pumped right now

Penny's on!

(she's a PRO - look at that GRIP!)

I'm ON!

there are no words, really...

the strip-down!

DONE. (gear has to come off for the clock to stop!)

yes. this is for real.

And, just in case the pictures aren't enough for you, Mkay got VIDEO:

'East Side' beach, & CAMP!

We had an awesome time in Machias this weekend. The sun was shining (most of the time) and we spent lots of time outside with our friends and family. Sunday morning we had an awesome breakfast - waffles with Gram's homemade blueberry sauce, Joe's Sausage, baked beans & Gram's rolls. Oh my! It was a feast! But, the camera died so there are no pictures of those festivities. (Joe Parisi runs an awesome little food shop specializing in homemade sausages and other fine cuts of meat, cheese, and specialty items in Machias. He doesn't have a website, but if you are in town and the flag is out, stop by! It will be worth it. 9 West St, Machias)

Here are some pictures from the weekend:

This is my mom's beautiful 'camp', or - the place where our rustic camp once stood. It's a gorgeous spot, and I'm looking forward to many, many wonderful times spent here soon! (with a FLUSHING toilet!)

Alex, Layla, mom & Jeannie enjoying some beach time.

'Camp' is the only place Layla gets to run FREE!

Have I mentioned I like it at camp? (LOVE IT)

Ever wonder what a dog looks like mid-shake? Here you go.

FOR SALE: The Ruth Brown House

$88,500 / 2BR Cape Cod style house with views of Machias Bay (Machiasport, ME)

Built in the mid-1800’s, this original Cape sits in the middle of Trafton’s Hill, boasting spectacular ocean views of Machias Bay from an unfinished 2nd floor room, which would make an impressive master suite. The 1500 sq. foot house sits on approximately .25 acres with a detached barn. Original details remain, including pumpkin pine flooring and large, oversized windows - framework complete with rosette block detail. The house was recently converted from oil to propane heating system.  The structure is sound, but cosmetic updates are needed. First floor includes 4 rooms and a bathroom. Second floor includes two small bedrooms and the large, unfinished ‘attic’ space. Whether it be your reasonably priced summer home, or year-round residence, this house has all the charm Downeast Maine has to offer.
The ‘Ruth Brown’ house is located in the heart of downtown Machiasport, within walking distance of historic Liberty Hall and the Gates House. 3 ½ miles from Jasper’s Beach. The town hosts historical significance, as the first Naval Battle of the American Revolution was fought here in the waters of Machias Bay.

Starboard & Jasper's Beach

Standing on Starboard, looking across to Ingalls Island

This truck was driving across a sandbar from Ingalls island. Access to the island by vehicle is only available 3 or 4 hours a day when the tide is just right. We happened to be looking on just at the right moment!

Then, we went down the road to Jasper's Beach, known for it's polished smooth round rocks. It was a gorgeous day!

Memorial Day

We were in Machias for a great little parade on Memorial Day.

Cooper's first parade!

Powerful.

The Rose M. Gaffney kids were absolutely incredible! Way to go, Bulldogs!

Mowry Beach

Mowry Beach is located in Lubec, Maine. Head towards Campobello Island, and just before you hit the border crossing, hang a tight right and follow the road all the way to the end. It's a nice, long beach - some decent beach glass finds. We went for a day drive this past Sunday and it was COLD! (notice all the hoodies pulled tight!) Some shots from the day:

Here's Scott. He is determined to make seaglass-finding an Olympic sport. He finds the tiniest scrids of seaglass EVER, and then shreaks with joy. His rules are: you MUST stay in your own seaglass-finding 'lane', and no throwing junk into other people's lanes. Way to go, Scott.
